Hello! I’m Dr. Huma Pierce, loving dog Mom of two elder poodles, one 9-year-old rescue named Dusty = “Lucky” and the other 19-year-old, Cooper = “Loyal.”
With 25 years of experience in postural biomechanics for humans as a Chiropractic Physician, combined with a degree in Evolutionary Biology from the University of Toronto, I began channeling my passion and expertise into designing braces for dogs—this is driven by love and a deep desire to make my own dog live beyond the age of 20 years old. In 2018, my bichon-poo Cooper injured two discs in his back and started dragging his leg. I was terrified. It felt like I was facing the possibility of losing him, and I knew I had to do something. That moment ignited a new chapter of dedication and innovation, one that is changing the lives of cared for dogs everywhere. My method, braces and positive outlook for the at-home physical care of dogs is slowly and steadily changing the entire field of veterinary rehabilitative medicine in favor of the pet parent. Empowering the pet parent to rehab their loves at home is the best kind of aging in place, I can think of. 🐕🦺
Back to the story... After a cortisone shot at the Emergency Vet Clinic and a poor prognosis, I asked for a gentle dynamic back brace to stabilize Cooper’s back. I assumed the Vet clinic had something for Cooper. They didn’t, the only options were more life-reducing drugs, shots, and surgery. Cooper was too fragile for all of that. I needed something that could stabilize him while allowing him to move, lay down, and help him heal comfortably. So, I rolled up my sleeves and embarked on a quest to help him. I refused to quit or take what was dealt to me without a fight. Cooper is my ride or die.
I then learned of a well-respected Veterinary Rehabilitation clinic that was actually near my house in Portland, Oregon. I desperately needed to find a Veterinarian that was cutting edge, someone who didn’t just rely on drugs and surgery. Dr. Bianca Shaw was that veterinarian, and was inspired to help me test my braces to improve Cooper’s mobility. Over the next 5 years, it was a partnership built, not just on helping my Cooper, but on improving the quality of life of all older and injured dogs. Hundreds of iterations later, the vest and sleeve brace design that I cobbled out of soccer socks, came true. Dr. Shaw tested them with me in her clinic and it worked! It became the first sleeve-based, gentle resistance, elastic leg lifting, restoring balance and symmetry brace available without a prescription.
